Becoming an acolyte is a great way for middle school and high school student members of the church to become active in the worship service.
Acolytes are the members of the service who are most commonly seen carrying the cross, torches, or assisting in communion. The most important role of an acolyte is to work behind the scenes, assisting the clergy, to keep the church service running smoothly and efficiently.
Serving as an acolyte is good for students who want to become involved with the church, or for students who simply want something to do throughout the service other than being a member of the congregation.
Training for acolytes begins during the summer after confirmation; confirmation typically occurs during their 6th grade year. The last year to acolyte is typically the senior year in high school. Confirmed students in middle school or high school who wish to become acolytes or know more about the roles of an acolyte are encouraged to do so.
