Banner Bearer Responsibilities

Arrival
• 9:55: Appropriate Attire: red cassock, cincture, white cotta, black shoes with toes and heels.
• 10:05: Banner bearers bring Episcopal banner and American flag to Kent Room.
• 10:10: Priest prays. Verger, crucifer, torchbearers, move to Narthex door.
• 10:10: Banner bearers move to door on either side of the altar, one on each side. After the priest rings the bell the banner bearers will lead the choir up the side aisles and fall in behind torchbearers. NOTE:BE ALERT. KEEP FLAGS AWAY FROM TORCHES.
• 10:15 Bell rings. Procession begins.
• Put the banner/flag in stands by lectern or pulpit—Episcopal banner on right, American flag on left as you face the altar.
• Banner bearers sit on right with crucifer.
• Note to American flag bearer: reverence (bow) toward altar when crossing in front of it on the way to sit down.
• Banner bearers participate in the service with the congregation—kneeling, praying, singing, listening.
Eucharist
• Banner bearers are among the first to receive communion kneeling at the altar rail with the verger and other acolytes. After receiving communion stand ready to help anyone who may need help getting up the steps to the altar.
End of Service
• When music begins banner bearers move quickly and quietly to the lectern or pulpit, take banner/flag from holder. Be alert and prepared to follow the torchbearers up the center aisle in front of choir.
• Leave through Narthex door. When music ends, return banner/flag to holders by lectern/pulpit and then unvest.
